Vlad from SageBlogger asked if I had any tips to make a conference trip less expensive. He was referring to Affiliate Summit Boston (earn a free pass) coming up shortly but I think these few ideas apply to any conference or trade show.
Travel Less
Traveling in cities is expensive. Your best bet is to stay in the hotel where the conference is if it’s affordable.
If you do need to travel try for a cab or the hotel shuttle.
In addition, try and find people who are going were you are going and split the fee with them.
Eat Cheaper
Avoid the fancy dinners and try for something cheaper in the hotel lobby.
Grab breakfast at the hotel if they offer it free or cheap.
Eat free food if the conference offers lunches or dinners.
Don’t network over food, eat quick and cheap, then go meet people. Or find other’s that want to eat cheap.
Don’t Drink Or Drink The Free Stuff
Alcohol is a really lame and unnecessary expense that adds up fast.
If you can’t find free alcohol then just skip it.
Night Life For Free
Do some networking before the conference and make sure you are on the guest lists for any parties or events you want to take part in.
Many companies throw free parties and get togethers.
It’s ReallY Pretty Cheap If You Want It To Be
I was surprised how little money I spent at Affiliate Summit East and probably could even spend less in Boston if I wanted to.
In addition to the tips above I would also email any conference organizer and see if they offer any coupons, comp passes, or any other discount that can help you save a few bucks. If you have a blog let them know if you’ll be covering the conference on your site. If you’ll be in boston you can do that here ;)
