There are many weird and downright crazy conspiracy theories about how to improve your alexa rank. However you can quit reading any other article about Alexa rank and read this:

That’s it. Quit reading nonsense. No tomfooloery. Even alexa tells you that. Get more traffic that has the toolbar installed, or encourage your visitors to install the toolbar.

Alexa’s traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of Alexa Toolbar users over a rolling 3 month period. A site’s ranking is based on a combined measure of reach and pageviews. Reach is determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site. However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single pageview. The site with the highest combination of users and pageviews is ranked #1.

Personally I think Alexa is extremely transparent about how they rank sites so I’m not sure where the guesswork comes into play. For instance read their disclaimers here where they tell you exactly how inaccurate their rankings are. Doesn’t seem like they are hiding anything to me.

Once upon a time I even asked alexa about one of the theories of putting a widget on your site to increase your alexa rank and they said it didn’t help, but people STILL believe to this day what they want and to the contrary, which implies to me that they think Alexa is trying hide something or conspire against them. Whatever.

And probably the dumbest, and I mean dumbest thing I’ve seen people doing is instead of having people link to their site, they link to a redirect on alexa that forwards to their site. Seriously. People ACTUALLY prefer a link going to alexa that forwards to their site instead of a direct link to their own site, hoping that their alexa will improve. Wow.
